The Hamburg Educational System 

All children are required to attend school at the age of six. If the child turns six after 1st July in the year of enrolment at school the child can start school early on request. The mandatory length of time for school education is ten years. 

Most of the 223 primary schools are full-time day schools beginning at 8 am until 4 pm with the option of child care until 6 pm, which is supported by a cooperation partner. The four-year primary school is followed by the choice between two different types of secondary schools. 

Here it’s the parental right to decide which kind of school their child is going to attend. 

• Comprehensive school (Stadtteilschule) 

• Grammar school (Gymnasium), British A Levels (Abitur) 

The Comprehensive School (Stadtteilschule) offers the option of taking the Abitur at the end of the 13th year. The Abitur is relatively equivalent to British A level / American SAT examinations and allows students to attend university afterwards in accordance with the numerus clauses. The Grammar School (Gymnasium) finishes with the Abitur after 8 years at the end of the 12th school year and allows students to attend university afterwards in accordance with the numerus clauses.
